Is Your Child Enjoying Piano

In my years of teaching piano, I have come across many children who quit the piano lessons class after a while, and quite frankly, I have lost count of them.

As father to a young girl, I do understand the frustration of parent when your kids tell you that they want to quit the class and who don’t?

After the hassle of paying up for the piano lessons, reschedule your own timetable to accommodate the sending and picking up of the kids to and from the class, you are then told that they want to quit.

Putting frustration asides, as parent, it is important that you find out why your child lost interest in playing piano. There must be a reason that triggers the changes and if you are able to identify the cause of it, you may be able to reiterate the child’s passion again.

Can it be your child is too overloaded with activities?

Can it be traveling time to and from the class is too long and the child get tired?

Can it be the lesson is scheduled at a time that is inconvenient for the child, such as too early in the morning or too late in the evening?

Can it be the teacher’s teaching method is bored and your child lost interest after a while?

Or can it be your child has tried and maybe piano is not for them.

There could be many other reasons and it is best that you sit down and talk to your kids slowly to find out the reason.

Most of the time, the answer from the kids will be: I am bored or I don’t like piano anymore. Now, that is standard answer and you need to continue to drill down into details as to why they are bored and don’t like piano. Make sure that you are not forceful and demanding, instead, put the question across nicely and carefully, giving the young child an impression that you cared and are concerned about him. Once he is comfortable, more detailed will be revealed and you can then proceed to tackle them.

Besides talking to the kids, you can also consider to talk to the piano teacher. The teacher may be able to tell you more if your kid is facing problem in the class and whether he is enjoying the piano lessons. If the teacher has many years of experience teaching young children, they will have come across many such cases and should be able to give you some sound advices. Talk to the teacher about the complaint that your kids made and try to work out something with the teacher that could help to lead your kids back to piano.

Ultimately, as parent, you need to make sure that your kids love and enjoy piano. If they don’t enjoy piano, consider switching to other musical instrument instead. Forcing them to continue will make the matter worst and sooner or later, they will QUIT again
